Prior to our screening of Shirin, film scholar Sara Saljoughi discusses the role of women in Kiarostami's oeuvre and the film's confrontation with "the look" in post-revolutionary Iranian cinema. Paring Kiarostami's method to a hypnotic minimal, the radical and enrapturing Shirin consists of 113 close-ups of women (some famous, many not) intently watching a film.

The year 2016 marks 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare. To honour this milestone, the Fisher Library is holding an exhibition that explores the rich printed history of Shakespeare, and features the only Canadian-held copy of the celebrated 1623 First Folio on display. With almost 60 books on display - running chronologically from 1548 to 2010 - the exhibition features early source material such as Holinshed's Chronicles (1587) and Plutarch's Lives (1579) along with a range of Renaissance genres and forms, from maps to bibles to works of poetry, anatomy and heraldry. Later editions of Shakespeare and experiments with his works will also be prominently featured in the exhibition and accompanying catalogue.

Documenting American life in all its startling complexity and diversity, the photographers and filmmakers featured in the AGO's latest exhibition present compelling images of individuals and communities on the perceived margins of society. Featuring over 200 works, the exhibition includes photographs by Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, Danny Lyon, Nan Goldin, the anonymous visitors of Casa Susanna and experimental films by Kenneth Anger, Marie Menken, Shirley Clarke, Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie. These images portray musicians, protesters, cross-dressers, bike gangs, politicians and socialites, individuals both at odds and united, against a backdrop of rapid social change.

Set in Calcutta, Pyaasa (meaning “thirsty” in Hindi) tells the story of Chaya, an eleven-year-old untouchable who dreams of nothing more than learning her times table. When Chaya's mother begs a woman from a higher caste to give Chaya a job at a local tea stall, Chaya's journey from childhood to adulthood begins and ends over ten days. A moving and heartfelt play, Pyaasa illustrates with subtlety and nuanced truth the inequities and injustices that persist through the Indian caste system. But it also speaks to us about the inequities and injustices that are all around us here in our own community.
