Installation of Electric Sub-Meters in Rental Buildings
Electricity and tenants
In multi-unit rental buildings, some landlords are switching to a system of individual meters for each unit, meaning that tenants are billed directly and pay for their own electricity in return for a reduction in rent.
The city of Toronto Housing webpage has a seven page report prepared by the General Manager of Shelter, Support and Housing Administration to the Tenant Defense Sub-Committee. It focuses on the aspects in the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) dealing with installation of smart meters in rental buildings and the current practise of installing smart meters.
At the moment, installations of sub-meters in occupied rental units depend on whether residents volunteer to participate. Before taking this step, you might want to check out your rights (PDF). For an in-depth look at the issue, see the recent staff report (PDF) on installation of smart meters in rental units.
