Eligibility |
Income Support
- Adults 18 years and over with a verified physical or mental disability expected to last a year or more
- the disability must make it difficult to care for self, go into the community or work
- must be resident of Ontario and be financially eligible
- persons may also qualify if any of the following apply:
- in receipt of disability benefits under the Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
- 65 years and over and not eligible for Old Age Security (OAS)
- live in a psychiatric facility
- live in a facility under the Developmental Services Act or in a home under the Homes for Special Care Act
- are about to turn 18 and currently receive assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities Benefit (formerly Handicapped Children's Benefit)

- Persons 16 years and over with a physical or mental disability expected to last a year or more
- the disability must make it difficult to find or keep work
- must be a resident of Ontario willing and able to work in Canada

How to apply |
- Apply by phone, letter or in person to the nearest local office (see branch records) < applications for Employment Support are also available on Web site
- persons in need of immediate assistance should apply for Ontario Works -- see separate entry Toronto Community and Neighbourhood Services, Social Services Division braille and tone elevators with lowered buttons designated parking

Income Support
- Support includes drug card for prescribed drugs
- mobility devices, batteries and repair
- dental care
- vision care benefit and hearing aids
- home repairs
- health related benefits
- extended health benefits
- Community Start-Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB) -- assistance for persons with disabilities who need to move, pay rent arrears in order to avoid being evicted, or pay utility arrears or reconnection fees, or assist with costs associated with discharge from an institution or move due to family violence
- heating allowance
- assistive devices
- guide dogs
- utilities
- Employment Start-Up Benefit
- child care costs
- Mandatory Special Necessities -- includes diabetic supplies, surgical supplies and dressings, transportation to medical treatment if cost exceeds $15 in a month
- Special Diet Allowance may be available
Employment Support
- Provides goods and/or services to remove barriers to competitive employment and to assist people with disabilities to attain competitive employment goals available on a voluntary basis
- may include the following goods and services -- employment planning and preparation
- grooming costs
- skills training
- job placement
- self employment assistance
- adaptive technologies for training/employment
- books, supplies
- Welfare Fraud Hotline 1-800-394-7867 -- collects information on possible fraudulent use of financial assistance and forwards to issuing level of government
- Developmental Services -- funding and service system management to community programs providing residential community support services to persons with developmental disabilities
- Violence Against Women Programs (VAWP) -- funding and service system management to community programs, shelters and counselling services supporting violence against women prevention initiatives
- Interpreter/Intervener Services -- funding to community agencies
- Special Services at Home (SSAH) -- provides funds to families for the purchase of in-home supports related to parent relief and skills development
- Eligibility -- children 18 years and under with physical disabilities living in the family home
- children and adults with developmental disabilities living in the family home
- Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities Benefit (formerly Handicapped Children's Benefit) -- provides funds to families who have children under 18 years with physical and developmental disabilities
- monthly amount depends on severity of disability, family income and special costs incurred related to the disability
