Advocacy Centre for Tenants - Ontario (ACTO)

Represents the interests of low income Ontario residents (tenants, housing co-operative members and homeless people) to better their housing situation by taking test cases to court. They offer no direct legal services to individuals except in relation to test cases that could have a significant impact on many people. They are funded by Legal Aid Ontario.

The Advocacy Centre along with the Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO) has designed an interactive web tool for people who share rental accommodation. It helps renters figure out which laws apply to their situation and what are their rights and responsibilities.

Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto (CHFT)

Today, the Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto (CHFT) is a member-supported organization representing more than 45,000 people living in more than 160 non-profit housing co-operatives located in Toronto and York Region. As a service to the general public, CHFT provides a 24-hour housing information line. Basic information on co-op housing is available in six languages - English, French, Spanish, Polish, Somali, and Tamil. The information line receives more than 36,000 calls a year. If you need a subsidy to help you pay for your housing, contact Toronto Social Housing Connections at 416-392-6111. TSHC administers the waiting lists for subsidized housing in Toronto including most co-ops.

Federation of Metro Tenants’ Associations (FMTA)

Since 1974 the FMTA has worked to help tenants understand their rights. The FMTA is an organization of tenants and other community-based groups. It is a non-profit organization, and all of their services and publications are free of charge.

The FMTA has helped thousands of Toronto tenants to organize and fight above-guideline rent increases (AGI), and assist them in applying for City of Toronto grants for representation costs to attend AGI hearings if they are eligible.

The FMTA advocates to governments to improve the rights and protections for tenants. They inform the media about the tenants’ point of view. They also work with other supportive community groups on issues that affect tenants.

Residents of the Toronto Community Housing Corporation have recently established a new non-profit organization for social housing tenants. It is called Toronto Housing Association of Tenants (THAT) Corporation which is carrying on from the old City Wide Tenant Council. Both the old and new versions of this group are the by far the largest tenants' association in Toronto, in Ontario and probably Canada too.
