Yonge Street Mission

The Yonge Street Mission has been on the front lines of service since 1896, providing emergency help, and fostering long-term change in the lives of individuals, families and the community itself.

Programs & Services:

Food
Hot meals and nutritious snacks are served daily to youth at Evergreen Centre and all ages at the Christian Community Centre, as an integral part of all programs.

Health Care
Full health care is provided to street youth at Evergreen with no health card required.

Housing
Transitional and supportive housing is offered through 26 units in our Genesis Place apartments and five units offsite. Our programs for youth and adults offer help to find housing and resolve housing issues.

Education
Throughout the school years, we offer Homework Clubs, tutoring, and a range of computer courses in a state-of-the-art lab, with free computers awarded to graduates of the Introductory class. Bursaries assist youth in our Student Awards program to attend college and university.

Employment
Intensive programs, Next Step and Connecting Youth to Work, help prepare youth for employment. Workshops and counselling assist others with job search and work/ life skills.

Cummer Avenue United Church

We are a community of Christians, seeking to grow in faith, reaching out to others, and working for social justice.

Programs & Services:

Drop-Inn Program
Guests enjoy a buffet breakfast, hot nourishing lunch, and have the opportunity to be with others and receive support and assistance. This program is run with the support of a team of professionals including Legal Assistance, Outreach workers from the City of Toronto, Health Care workers from North York General, Dental Assistance from the City of Toronto.

St.Felix Centre

St. Felix Centre is a community centre located in downtown Toronto dedicated to compassionate service for those experiencing challenges including homelessness, mental illness, addictions, violence, malnutrition, abuse, insufficient education, and lack of positive role models. We work to provide an inclusive spiritual presence, social outreach, direct service, and advocacy for those in need.

Drop-In
The St. Felix Centre Community Drop-In provides a safe space for our guests to connect with friends and St. Felix Centre staff, access a washroom and shower, use a computer, print or fax a document, volunteer at the Centre, warm up in the winter and cool down in the summer.

Community Meals
Our Community Meal programs provide guests with a nutritious meal, a safe space and the opportunity to socialize with one another.

The Cornerstone

Toronto Community Hostel

Toronto Community Hostel is a non-profit, charitable organization providing shelter, food, crisis intervention, housing assistance, employment counselling, one-to-one and family counselling, children’s program, outreach and support services to 24 persons daily. Service users are often newcomers to Canada and the population includes families, couples, single men and women.

Programs & Services:

Shelter
The shelter program addresses the basic needs of homeless individuals by providing accommodation, food and safety, twenty-four hours a day, 7 days a week. The program provides clients with referrals, advocacy and escorts to medical, dental, legal and educational services. Assistance is provided to ensure clients receive all mandated financial entitlements. Through the program, clients receive escorts to access health and library cards and are able to attend recreational activities and outings such as gym, plays, sports events, concerts and cultural events.

Counselling
The counselling program offers assessment, counselling plans, life skills coaching and short term counselling services to singles, newcomers and parents on an individual, group and family basis.

Housing
Through the Housing Program, long and short-term housing plans are developed considering the individual’s source of funds, total income and eligibility for government assistance. All housing options such as co-ops, transitional, supportive and social housing are investigated.

Employment
The Employment Program provides clients with employment and training opportunities and helps prepare them for employment. Through the program, clients learn job search and interview techniques. Clients also receive referrals to job training programs and job interviews.

Hours: Tue 2:30 pm-4:30 pm, Wed 2:30 pm-4:30 pm, Fri 11 am-12:45 pm

The Lighthouse

As a multi-cultural Christian outreach and community centre, The Lighthouse demonstrates God’s love by offering unconditional hospitality, by sharing our resources and by helping people in need.

Programs & Services:

Food Bank
Eligible/registered clients are provided with food from our Food Bank every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon between 1-3 p.m.

Community Advocacy
Personal advocacy and assistance are regularly provided to Food Bank clients who require help or answers regarding access to hydro, bill-payment concerns, landlord-tenant issues and the like. The Lighthouse offers information and assistance in a safe and welcoming environment, endeavouring to treat all participants with dignity and respect.

Sistering

Sistering is a women’s organization that offers practical and emotional support through programs which enable them to take greater control over their lives. Guided by the principles of Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression, Sistering works to change social conditions which endanger women’s welfare.

Case Support
Case support staff assist women with navigating the income support system, the health
care system, the criminal justice and the immigration system. They offer women support to deal with emotional issues such as trauma and experiences of violence, including:

  • individual supportive counseling
  • groups at Sistering
  • referrals to a broad range of therapies.

Housing Support
Sistering’s Community Support staff provide women who need housing with assistance
finding and maintaining housing, eviction prevention and support with dealing with
landlords and housing providers, including help for women appearing at the Landlord and
Tenant Board (formerly the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal).
